Choosing work and rest
The work-to-rest ratio decides what an interval session trains. Long work with short rest, such as 40 seconds on and 20 off, keeps your heart rate high and builds the engine for longer workouts. Short work with long rest, such as 20 seconds on and 40 off, lets you go close to flat out every round and trains speed and power.
This timer runs work, then rest, for every round, and shows which round you are on and what comes next. The total time is shown under the settings so you know what you are signing up for.
Ways to use it
- Circuits: one movement per round, cycling through 4 or 5 stations. 10 rounds of 40/20 is two laps of five stations.
- Rowing, running and bike: 8 to 10 rounds of 1 minute hard, 1 minute easy is a classic session.
- Skill work: 30 seconds of double-unders or handstand practice, 30 seconds of rest, for 10 minutes.
- Strength accessory work: 45 seconds of work, 75 seconds of rest, with a heavier load.
